Hi there! My name is Jaz rose

I am a freelance children's picture book illustrator based in Devon. I have a BA Hons degree in Illustration and a Masters in Illustration: Authorial Practice, from Falmouth University.

What inspires my work?

My practice mainly revolves around themes of fantasy, fairy tales and mythology, as I love to introducing readers to a narrative they can fully immerse themselves into. So, films, animated series and books surrounding those themes have a massive influence on my practice, including Harry Potter and Alice in Wonderland. I love to find threads within these creations, such as the Nordic trolls from the Hobbit to influence my own characters and narratives, keeping elements of mythology alive and present in the world of children's picture books. I also like to use my own experiences of the world and nature that surrounds us to inspire my own stories and characters.

My process

I like to use traditional media, like watercolour to create the base of my artwork, and then I edit them digitally to create the refined final outcome. I find that with this combination of medias, I am able to create work that is not too digitalised, and some of the watercolour shines through subtly giving it a more organic quality than if everything was purely digital.
